Putting your data center on an energy diet

In February, Jonathan Koomey, a staff scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and a consulting professor at Stanford University, published a study showing that in 2005, organizations worldwide spent $7.2 billion to provide their servers and associated cooling and auxiliary equipment with 120 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity. This was double the power used in 2001.

Global banking company HSBC Holdings plc said today that it has selected Aperture Technologies' software for capacity planning and management of its data center network, which includes 22 data centers in 10 countries. Aperture's VISTA 500 enables organizations to visually manage their data center environment at a glance, including space, power, cooling, network, and storage. HSBC said its implementation of VISTA 500 (PDF) will begin this year and is expected to be complete worldwide by 2009.
