Energy Management in Data Centers: Why metrics are so important

A report released by Aperture Research Institute states "that organizations are unable or unwilling to meet the expectations set by the introduction of green initiatives... One reason is a lack of infrastructure for measuring power consumption. We conclude that data centers lack the tools and processes they need if the organization is to effectively balance its environmental impact and its business priorities."

A recent Aperture Research Institute survey found that data center managers are looking to green initiatives to help manage their operating expenses, with 87 percent of those surveyed having a green initiative in place. Of those indicating they have a green initiative in place, thirty-nine percent of respondents do not expect the economic slowdown to have an impact, while 26 percent expect to intensify efforts to go green.
